Overview
This course is designed to equip you with information and practical strategies for working with both child and adolescent voices. It provides essential knowledge for those planning to work in primary and secondary education, for those involved in choral training, or in youth theatre. The course is also highly relevant to those working with clients in tertiary education, equipping them to target vocal problems arising from poor voice use during the years of voice change..

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the unit you will have acquired

  1 An understanding of the significant physiological changes of the human voice and their effects from childhood to adulthood.
  2 The ability to identify distinct stages of change in the adolescent male voice.
  3 Knowledge of what to expect in the developing female voice during adolescence.
  4 Appropriate strategies for stabilising voices during the change period.
  5 Information about application in spoken and sung voice.

Unit Assignments

  1 Present in note form brief case histories of two clients of different genders. You may use audio or video recordings in support of your written material.
  2 Provide recorded evidence of your use of the testing procedure in 5 different examples. Two of these should be girls. You should aim to assess fundamental speaking pitch and voice quality in habitual voice use.

Unit Assessment
You will be assessed on your understanding of the testing procedure for boys' voices and ability to identify the needs of your students during phases of voice change.

Note
Support for this assessment is offered by phone or follow-up meeting with the tutor.

THE FACULTY

Gillyanne Kayes is a freelance writer, teacher and voice expert. She has been training voices for the last 21 years and has numerous clients working in professional theatre and film.

Jeremy Fisher is a performance coach, Musical Director and prize-winning accompanist. As a vocal coach he works with opera sings, actors, singing teachers and song writers on repertoire, style and performance integration.

David Carey is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, David studied Speech and Drama at the RSAMD, gained his MA (with distinction) in Contemporary English Language and Linguistics at Reading University. He is currently Voice Tutor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Dr Meribeth G Dayme is Chief Executive of LifeWise International and works as a Voice and Communication Specialist in business and the Performing Arts.

Julie McLean is a qualified Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) with fifteen years post-graduate experience. She has worked for the last six years in a specialist capacity with voice disordered clients in the NHS and private sector.

Lise Olson is currently a Lecturer in Acting and Voice at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts and teaches 'The Voice of Violence' for Vocal Process.

Jenevora Williams is teacher-in- residence for The National Youth Choir, works with the choristers at St Paul's Cathedral, and acts as consultant to Decca, Hyperion and the ROH on child performers.
