Module One - Unit 5
With One Voice

Overview
A one-day course that explores the theory and practice of current methodology in training for singing and speaking.

This course will lay the foundations for integrating speaking and singing voice in teaching and performance and support you in your Module One assignments. The aim is to give an overview of various approaches and identify key principles that influence each discipline. David Carey will introduce and discuss common vocal problems that are encountered in habitual speaking voice, including diagnosis; he will also coach you in personal voice use. Gillyanne Kayes will introduce key aspects of pedagogy in singing voice and their relevance to healthy vocal function.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the unit you will have acquired

  1 Have valuable background information about pedagogy in speaking and singing voice.
  2 Have gained an understanding of the differences in training requirements for singing and speaking voice.
  3 Be able to reflect on personal voice use and terminology in your teaching.
  4 Have laid a foundation for further work on integrating singing and speaking voice.

Unit Assignments
Write a report on the day, outlining key points and how you expect to apply them in your teaching or client work (750 words maximum).

Unit Assessment
You will be assessed on your understanding of the key points set out in the workshop and the relationship between speech, singing and vocal function.

THE FACULTY

Gillyanne Kayes is a freelance writer, teacher and voice expert. She has been training voices for the last 21 years and has numerous clients working in professional theatre and film.

Jeremy Fisher is a performance coach, Musical Director and prize-winning accompanist. As a vocal coach he works with opera sings, actors, singing teachers and song writers on repertoire, style and performance integration.

David Carey is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, David studied Speech and Drama at the RSAMD, gained his MA (with distinction) in Contemporary English Language and Linguistics at Reading University. He is currently Voice Tutor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Dr Meribeth G Dayme is Chief Executive of LifeWise International and works as a Voice and Communication Specialist in business and the Performing Arts.

Julie McLean is a qualified Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) with fifteen years post-graduate experience. She has worked for the last six years in a specialist capacity with voice disordered clients in the NHS and private sector.

Lise Olson is currently a Lecturer in Acting and Voice at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts and teaches 'The Voice of Violence' for Vocal Process.

Jenevora Williams is teacher-in- residence for The National Youth Choir, works with the choristers at St Paul's Cathedral, and acts as consultant to Decca, Hyperion and the ROH on child performers.
